Hear your um the moment you say it.

UmAh counts your filler words and your pace. On your Mac it flags each one live during a call; on your iPhone it scores a meeting after it ends. Nothing leaves the device.

During the call

UmAh for Mac

Menu bar app, Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later

A small panel that flashes the word while it is still in your mouth.

UmAh listens to your microphone and flashes um, uh, like or you know the instant it hears one, with your pace in words per minute next to it. On a call it compares your mic against what the Mac is playing and drops the other person's voice, so only your words count. When the call ends, a reflection board opens: a one-line verdict, talk versus listen time, your pace, and fillers by word.

  • Seventeen built-in filler words with context rules, so "turn right" and "I would like" don't count
  • A pace band you choose, and one gentle nudge when you run over it for a minute
  • Speech recognition on your Mac with whisper.cpp; no audio is recorded or uploaded, no account
  • Free to use. Pro adds history, trends, custom words and the more accurate model

UmAh's reflection board after a call: the verdict Fast, with a lot of fillers; 8 minutes 18 seconds talked and 4 minutes 10 listened; 162 words per minute against a 130 to 160 band; 38 fillers, mostly so

After the meeting

UmAh for iPhone

iPhone, iOS 26 or later

Put the phone on the table. Read the report after.

Tap record at the start of a meeting or a practice run. When it ends, your iPhone builds a report card on the phone itself: fillers by word and per minute, your pace with its high and low, how much of the time you held the floor, and where in the meeting the fillers landed. Enroll your voice once and only your words are scored; everyone else is "them".

  • Fillers per minute, pace, talk share and a timeline of the meeting
  • Voice enrollment so the other people in the room don't count against you
  • Transcription and speaker matching run on the phone; no upload, no account
  • History keeps every report. Pro adds the full transcript, the timeline, trends and custom words

Two apps, one habit

Both count the same things. They differ in when you look.

  • Pro: history, weekly trends with CSV export, custom words, small.en model, change vs. last session

iPhone after, from a recording

  • Record the meeting from your pocket or the table
  • Report card: fillers per minute, pace high and low, talk share
  • Enroll your voice so only you are scored
  • History and trends across meetings

Get a note when they ship

One email when the Mac download and the App Store listing go live. Nothing else, ever.

Private by design

Nothing leaves the device

Speech recognition is whisper.cpp running on your Mac's GPU or your iPhone, with a bundled model. No audio is recorded, nothing is uploaded, and there is no account to make.

Only your words count

The Mac app drops the other party by comparing your mic against what the Mac is playing. The iPhone app matches your enrolled voice and labels everyone else "them".

What is kept

Session summaries, counts and pace, stay on the device for history. On the Mac, listening makes no network request at all; the only network use is an optional model download and the Pro purchase check.

Questions

Which words does it catch?

um, uh, ah, like, basically, actually, literally, so, right, you know, I mean, kind of, sort of, I think, probably, maybe, and or so. Context rules keep "turn right", "I would like" and "I actually shipped it" from counting. Every word can be switched off, and Pro lets you add your own.

Does it work with my meeting app?

UmAh never joins the meeting. The Mac app listens to the microphone, so it works with anything; it recognises Zoom, Teams, Webex, FaceTime, Discord, Slack huddles and browser calls to start a fresh session when a call starts and open the board when it ends. The iPhone app records the room, so the meeting can be anywhere.

Will other people on the call know?

No. UmAh shows nothing in the call and plays no audio. The Mac panel is a small window on your own screen; hide it with Cmd+Shift+Y. The iPhone app is a recorder on your own phone.

Which Macs and iPhones?

Apple silicon Macs on macOS 13 or later; the speech engine is built for Apple silicon only. Ignoring the other party needs macOS 14.2 or later. The iPhone app needs iOS 26.

Which permissions does it need?

On the Mac: Microphone, always, and System Audio Recording, optionally, so it can hear what the Mac is playing and ignore the other people on the call. On the iPhone: Microphone while you record. Both can be changed in Settings.

Does it drain the battery?

The Mac app idles at about 1% of a core while you are quiet and decodes twice a second while you talk, about a fifth of one core on an M4 Pro. The iPhone app does its work once, after you stop recording.

How do refunds and lost licenses work?

Mac purchases are made with the checkout provider named on your receipt, and refunds go through that provider; email [email protected] with the license ID from your receipt. iPhone purchases are App Store purchases, refunded by Apple.
